Life After Breast Cancer Treatment

pinkRibbon-156x300

In Canada, Over twenty thousand women will get diagnosed with breast cancer this year. The large majority of them will go on to live a successful life after treatment. Although treatment may be over, the healing process, both physical and emotional, can often take time.

Many products are available to help women who have had mastectomy or lumpectomy surgery. There are products available that will help you look and feel like yourself again. Amoena is one of the major leading companies which produces such products. At Charlotte Fashions and Lingerie we help give women a clear understanding on what each product can do for them and how it enables them to return to their everyday lives.

One of the first products to be aware of is a post-surgical camisole or bra. It is made from soft cotton with Lycra, making it comfortable and extendable for easy step-in entry, when it may be difficult to raise your arms. It has light support with two drainage pouches that can be removed later. It also comes with a lightweight fiberfill breast form. The camisole can then be worn as a relaxing garment or can be used as sleepwear.

Charlotte’s has two qualified mastectomy fitters on site to help clients with their fittings. The next step is to get fitted for a breast prosthesis (breast form) and bra. This should be done about 6 to 8 weeks after surgery or until your physician gives you the approval to proceed.

Also, there are partial forms for women who have undergone a lumpectomy. They are smaller in size and lighter in weight and are used to balance and reshape the breast.

All fitters know the importance of fitting women with the right size and shape of breast forms and partials. It is important to make an appointment and get fitted with a breast form and bra that will suit your personal needs. There are many sizes and shapes that a mastectomy breast form comes in. And at Charlotte’s, the two professional fitters, Tamar & Charlotte, will find you the proper breast prosthesis by identifying the proper one for you. The forms are designed for a natural feel and appearance. With lightweight whipped silicone and a patented comfort + technology for the comfort allowing the form to fit closely and securely.

The Canadian government will help subsidize $195.00 towards the cost of the breast prosthesis and $95.00 towards the partials. The application for the breast prosthesis grant is available at time of purchase, which then is mailed out with a wait period of about 4 to 6 weeks.
